Welcome to my news page

Here I will post some info about Portugal, some translation problems between Portuguese and English, some idiomatic expressions and its equivalent in the other language, some tips of language use…

To start, I hope I’m getting off on the right foot or, as we say in Portuguese, “Espero estar a começar com o pé direito” – this one is pretty close…

There is a slight difference though: in the English expression “right” is used as opposed to “wrong”. In Portuguese, although “direito” can be translated into “right” as in “the right to be free”, it is also used as opposed to the left (side)…

As some stories go, it is a tradition that comes all the way from Roman times. In Latin, the word for left is “sinistro”, meaning sinister (wicked). So, in order to attract good luck for all their events, they always entered parties, premises and the like with the right foot.
